The Oak Park Art League (OPAL) is seeking a part-time Executive Director (ED) for its art gallery and education center in Oak Park, IL. The ideal candidate should possess a combination of both strategic vision and business acumen to lead a historic, 97-year old nonprofit visual arts organization into the future.

Located at the center of Oak Park’s major tourism activity – Frank Lloyd Wright’s home/studio and Ernest Hemingway’s birth home, OPAL’s Carriage House Gallery is an Oak Park Cultural cornerstone and the ED plays a key role as a steward – preserving, protecting and advancing awareness of the significance of OPAL’s history to both Oak Park and Chicago’s broader arts community.

Position Summary:

  • The ED must possess fine-tuned communication skills, strong management experience and be well-versed in art curriculum and exhibition development. Key responsibilities include membership management, grant writing and arts education program development.

  • As a spokesperson for OPAL, the ED has an active role in community outreach, cultivating donor relationships and fundraising. A working knowledge of current technology and basic software applications is essential, as is budget management and experience with QuickBooks.

  • The ED reports directly to the OPAL Board President and works closely with the Board of Directors and its committees which currently include Exhibitions, Education, Fundraising, Marketing, Buildings and Grounds and Membership.

  • The ED will oversee part-time employees, including an Assistant Director, who is responsible for marketing, website management and exhibition installations, and an Education Coordinator who works with the ED to develop education programs, and assists with the administration needs of the gallery office.

  • Creativity is vital, as the ED collaborates with the Exhibition Committee to develop an annual schedule of exhibitions and related programming that include new initiatives - ARTifact and Art for Social Change exhibits, lectures and workshops.

  • A flexible schedule is required to accommodate gallery hours and various programs and activities, which include community outreach events, offsite meetings, fundraisers, and evening artist receptions. It would be advantageous for the candidate to live within easy commuting distance to the Oak Park area to align with ongoing community outreach.

  • It is desirable that applicants have a grasp of art history and architecture, as the ED will oversee the care of the Art League’s archive and permanent collection of artwork as well as assist with the maintenance, preservation and fundraising needs of OPAL’s historic building.

  • This ED position is an exceptional opportunity for a creative arts executive, who is interested in gaining valuable experience across all areas of operation in a nonprofit arts environment.

  • This is a part-time (approximately 25-30 hours / week), hourly position. Hourly rate is negotiable, depending on experience.
