Color is as integral to painting as oxygen is to breathing. It speaks to the viewer before they have a chance to decipher the imagery. Color can be garish or subtle, comforting or unnerving. Expertise in mixing color then is one of the most critical skills in painting. This workshop aims to demystify color by giving you a little science and some practical knowledge about the alchemy of color mixing. Demonstrations will show, among other things, how to mix true purple and beautiful flesh tones, and how to distinguish the nuances of and correctly use the warm and cool versions of each color. You will gain greater confidence when using color because you will see what happens and understand why it happens. So, bring your paints, brushes, and canvas paper and prepare for an adventure in color. A supply list will be provided to those who register for the workshop.

Brushes:  There are many brands and bristle attributes out there. To simplify things, I recommend Princeton Catalyst brushes. They are a good quality, mid-priced brush. Cheaper brushes are available, but I like these because they have a strong spring and hold up well.

Other useful brushes: These are optional, however, the Simply Simmons brushes are inexpensive. I spend more on my red sable rounds, though. It is generally worth it.

#6 Round, Red Sable  (any brand but Windsor Newton is a good quality brush)

Substrates 

Grumbacher Acrylic Pad (this is spiral bound)

Canvas paper (I buy Fredrix but any brand will do for this workshop)

Other: Disposable Palette,

Rags (old shirts and towels work well)

Paper towels

Painting smock (old button-down shirts work well)

Tackle box or Art Bag for your art supplies (I get mine at Home Depot or Menards)

Bar soap (ivory white is a gentle soap for clean-up) and bar soap container (optional)

“The Masters” Brush Cleaner (another good option for clean-up…but this is optional)
