Artist In Residence: Betty Kim

July through September 2025

B. Y. Kim is a lens-based artist and educator in the Chicago metropolitan area. She incorporates self-portraiture, archival materials, pop culture, and a range of fiction and non-fiction sources through her exploration of the following mediums: photography, printmaking, fiber arts, and sculpture. Her works have been exhibited at the Griffin Museum of Photography, Hyde Park Art Center’s Ground Floor Exhibition, Woman Made Gallery, Candela Books + Gallery, and Logan Center for the Arts. Kim received her MFA in Visual Arts from the University of Chicago.

Residency

During the residency, Kim will explore light and image-making through traditional and alternative processes in three parts:
1) Through experimentation, different substrates will be used to create an image with natural plant dyes. 2) Kim will ask volunteers to sit for portraits using family archival images or historical image projections. 3) At the end of the residency, the public is welcome to visit the studio and experience a living camera obscura. The studio space will be transformed into an exhibition space for anyone to experience image-making from within. To stay informed of updates during the residency, please visit her Instagram page.
