This course will survey different methods and applications in non-representational painting through exploration of the history of abstraction. This course is for beginning to intermediate students who are interested in learning the key artists and movements within abstract painting while investigating their own relationship to image-making from a more conceptual lens. Each week we will examine a different moment in art history and create drawings and paintings that may relate to what we learn. The emphasis of this course will be on learning to be more flexible and curious while making, and on building new habits around creating work that is non-representational. Students will work primarily with oil or acrylic-based media, however, we will also explore multi-media and drawing techniques.
This class is designed to be repeated.
