Juror: Kathleen Marie Garness
We invite contemporary artists to explore the timeless yet ever-evolving relationship between humanity and the botanical world in BLOOM: Art of Flowers, Foliage & Fruit. This juried exhibition celebrates the diverse ways artists interpret, reimagine, and respond to floral and botanical subjects through contemporary perspectives.
From intimate studies of botanical detail to abstract interpretations of natural forms, from environmental commentary to cultural symbolism, this exhibition seeks works that engage with flowers, foliage, and fruit as more than mere subject matter—as vessels for deeper artistic inquiry and expression.
Juried exhibition timed to align with Oak Park & River Forest Garden Walk June 28, 10am - 4pm

-
Kathleen Marie Garness has been studying plants most of her life, and has painted botanicals for over four decades. Her work has been shown at the National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian, Washington D. C.; Kew Gardens, London; the Chicago Botanic Garden, and many other venues. She is a scientific affiliate at the Field Museum and Morton Arboretum, and teaches watercolor, colored pencil, and an array of book arts. Kathleen’s undergraduate degree is from DePaul University and her master’s from Loyola University, Chicago. She was also the second woman president of the historic Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts, served as a vice-president of the Oak Park Art League, and now serves on the board of the American Society of Botanical Artists. With university botany programs being in decline, she feels it is even more important now for humans to have a deep and meaningful relationship with nature so that we can continue to steward it for future generations.
